House Calls 4 Pet Sitting

Dog fleas can be quite annoying

Dog fleas can be quite annoying! Not just to your pet, but to you as well. These parasites can cause itching, wounds, and overall stress to your dearest companion if they grow in numbers. They basically feed on the blood of your pets and have a steady grip on their skin because of their clawed legs and mouths that are made for sucking.

Flea problems may range from mild itching, scabbing wounds when there are a lot of fleas, and even anemia when you’re pet suffers from extreme flea conditions. Wounds result when your pets would bite on their skin in order to take the itch away.

How do I get rid of fleas?

There are a lot of options to get rid of fleas, and most pet owners would resort to chemical means to de-flea their dogs. These methods include purchasing topical treatment, dog shampoos, dog powders, dog collars with anti-flea components, anti-flea spray, and even oral or injecscratching off fleas table products which can kill fleas which can come into contact with the dogs.

Prevention is key when getting rid of fleas:

Natural insect control methods

·         Use a flea comb regularly to catch fleas – and then drown them in water

·         Wash pet bedding regularly

·         Vacuum regularly

·         Bathe your pet

However, they can multiply fast and you may not always see them immediately. When this happens, you can resort to an effective and natural anti-flea skin solution for your dogs.

Coffee Grounds as Your Natural Method to De-Flee

If you’ve always wondered what to do with the coffee grounds you have left over after your morning cup, you can now have a productive and health-beneficial way to use them. Using coffee grounds as a kind of pet scrub can help remove the fleas from the coat of your pets. Here’s how you can use it:

1.       Bathe your pet as you usually do with a gentle pet shampoo or a flea-removing shampoo. Lather the product well until it gets to the skin. Once you see fleas float up, take them and squish them against a hard surface.

2.       Rinse your pet thoroughly with warm water. Make sure all the lathering product is removed before proceeding to the next step.

3.       Prepare your coffee grounds and dampen them slightly. Rub them onto the coat of your pet. To do this more efficiently, rub against the natural flow of your pet’s fur to allow more of the coffee grounds to get to deeper parts of your pet’s coat. Being abrasive in nature, the coffee grounds can get more of the fleas which were left behind by the shampoo off of your pet’s coat.

4.       After kind of scrubbing the grounds for a few minutes, rinse your pet thoroughly and dry your pet with a clean towel.

5.       Once dry, you can also use an anti-flea powder to keep the fleas away.

a.       When using commercial flea and tick killer sprays or flea powders, make sure to ventilate your home properly and do not breathe in the poison or get it on your food. Close food containers and once done, clean out surfaces you use for eating or preparing meals from potential flea killer residue.

Your pet’s coat will even have a nice shine to it after using coffee as a part of your pet’s bathing routine. You can do this every time you give your pet a bath, or on an as needed basis.

For the summer months remember:

Fleas love heat! In addition to the prevention list above remember to keep your pets cool.
